Foto: Ole Kaland, NRK.Johan Kvandal is one of Norway's most frequently performed composers. His production consists of 85 opus for virtually all kinds of ensembles, from solo instruments to full orchestra and opera.

European classical music traditions and impulses from Norwegian folk music are synthesized into Kvandal's innovative musical language.

  • Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet with Kvandal on tour programme for 2018

    Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet has included Kvandal’s Quintet op. 34 (1971) on their permanent repertoire, together with works by Aho, Vasks and Nielsen. They compare the work with Shostakovich.
  • Between dream and melodrama

    Klassekampen: – Thanks to Johan Kvandal’s strong, but introverted music, Hamsun’s “Mysteries” has survived the leap from literary existential foreignness to music drama.
  • – Music is something truly mysterious

    My old pedagogue Nadia Boulanger once said: “The geniouses were great musicians. Without knowing it. But posterity knows that they also touched the mysterious”. This is how I regard the non-material in our existence, says Kvandal on the occasion of his 70th Anniversary.
