The composer is expressing the emotions of a person before his capital punishment (dødstraff). As Maria Stuart in her last hours.

In Church Aria: O, Domine Deus ! Op.26 the composer has expressed her feelings.

Skirne skal ride til Jotunheimen for sin herre, guden Frøy. Ved avreisen tolker han sin sinnstemning i dette verset:

"Myrkt er det ute og me lyt avstad yver doggvått fjell fram, yver huldreheimar fram. Både vert me berga eller både oss tek den ovsterke Jotun"

Skirne has to ride to the wild mountains, Jotunheimen for his master the god Froey. At the departure he is expressing his state of mind:
"It is dark outside, and we must ride over misty mountains. We both will survive, or be captured by the tremendous strong Jotun (Troll)"

About the text: On a rune inscription from the 5.Century found on a stone in Western Norway,  he words are translated:
"Hadulaikar, I Hagustaldar, entombed my son"
The poetry of the song describes the fathers emotions when loosing his son, remembering all his good abilities/qualities......"

"Håret globjart, eld i augo, sterk i handi, lett på laupo, jaga ville bjønn i heidi med det stutte tunge spjotet. Lang var natti einsam sat eg, inkje ljos på himilkvelven. Myrkret stengde alle leider, svevnen flaug og alt ting tagde......."

Lat rive slør, lat klovne sky mot dag att, blank og ny! Kva vil de her med dis og draum? Eg er ein elv med is og flaum, eg vil ein vår som grunnen rår, og så ein himmel høg og klår. No er eg trøytt og långe leid av bleik og blodlaus unatur.No er eg trøytt og meir enn keid av stivna, livlaus formkultur, av daude ord, papir og blekk, og tøv og tull og tankestrik.
